Afrikaans is a European language, with its origins in the Dutch language. Afrikaans is therefore classified as as a West Germanic language. The main part of the speakers live in South Africa, but there are also communities in Botswana, Lesotho, Angola, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zambia and, Australia where Afrikaans is the first language. 1/3 of the South African population speak Afrikaans and it is also the most common language in parts of Namibia. The Afrikaans language is divided into several dialects.
