Russian is the worlds 7th largest language, spoken by almost 280 million people. Russian is primarily spoken in Russia, but also by smaller groups in other countries such as Israel. Russian is the official language in a number of countries, among them Belarus, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. In Europe there are large ethnic groups with Russian as their mother tounge. In Spain, Germany, Greece and France are altogether 3 million people with Russian as their mother tounge. The U.N. has accepted Russian as one of the six official languages. Russian is written using a simplified version of the Kyrillian alphabet.
